Brigitte R.
Hansson
February 24, 1941 – May 11, 2026
Brigitte R. Hansson, a woman of profound resilience, unwavering spirit, and deep love, passed away peacefully in Libertyville, Illinois, in the early morning hours of May 11, 2026, at the age of 85.
Born Brigitte Rosmarie Bussian on February 24, 1941, in Germany, Brigitte’s early life was marked by the extraordinary challenges of a world in turmoil. At the tender age of ten, she faced an unimaginable journey, arriving in the United States alone. Following the tragic loss of her mother to food poisoning and the capture of her father by Russian forces during the war, she found a new home and a loving foundation with her aunt and uncle, Fred and Antoinette Laudi of Evergreen Park, Illinois.
Brigitte embraced her new life in America with a tenacity that would define her character. In 1959, she proudly achieved the status of United States citizenship, a milestone she cherished deeply, remaining a patriotic and grateful American for the rest of her days.
On March 3, 1962, she married Charles “Chuck” Patchel, and together they welcomed two sons into the world: Mark James (wife Brenda) and Kenneth Michael. As a dedicated mother and a diligent professional, Brigitte spent many years as a secretary, balancing the demands of work and family until her well-earned retirement in 2008.
Brigitte found her greatest peace and creative expression in her garden and in the meticulous care of her home. She possessed a nurturing touch, and just as she tended to her garden with patience and grace, she cultivated a life defined by perseverance, strength, and devotion to her family.
She leaves behind a legacy of endurance and warmth, cherished by her sons, Mark and Kenneth, and her daughter-in-law, Brenda. Though she faced the world alone as a child, she leaves it surrounded by the love of those she held most dear. She will be profoundly missed, but her indomitable spirit will remain a source of inspiration to all who knew her story.
Please feel free to share your memories or messages of condolence in the guestbook below.
At the request of the family, services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests planting a perennial in your garden this summer to honor Brigitte’s lifelong love of gardening.
