Freda May Mcpherson

August 24, 1933 — August 23, 2025

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Freda May McPherson nee Smith, who died peacefully on August 23, 2025, at the age of 92, in Libertyville, Illinois. Freda was a resident of Round Lake Heights, Illinois.

Born in Lampard Clarendon, Jamaica, on August 24, 1933, to Aubrey Cameron and Gwendolyn Smith, Freda embodied the warmth and spirit of her Caribbean heritage. She graduated high school and later built a fulfilling career at both Shure Brothers and Evanston Hospital. A woman of deep faith, she attended Second Baptist Church for many years and was a proud member of the Evanston Cricket Club.

Freda's life was defined by her immense love for her family. As a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she poured her heart into nurturing those around her. Her greeting, "Hi Love," was her signature, a simple yet profound way of making everyone she met feel cherished and seen. Freda was truly a selfless and loving soul. She found great joy in the simple pleasures of life, including spending time with her family, solving crossword puzzles, tending to her garden and an avid fan of the Chicago Bulls. Her passion for singing brought warmth and light to those around her; by lifting spirits with a favorite tune, her voice was a gift she shared freely.

Freda is survived by her loving children: Courtney Miller, Dahlia Miller, and Andrea Smith. She leaves behind a beautiful legacy in her grandchildren: Adrian Miller, Kareem Miller, Jermaine Campbell, Keion Miller, Raychelle Smith, Kemar Miller, Shemar Gladden, Kierra Miller, Michael-John Smith, and Shaylen Gladden. She was also the proud great-grandmother to Kaiden Miller, Amiyah Miller, Karter Miller, and Jaycee Campbell. Freda will also be deeply missed by her daughter-in-law Carrie Miller, son-in-law Michael Smith, and many nieces, nephews, and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Gwendolyn Smith and Aubrey Cameron; her aunt, Inez Williams; and her beloved grandchild, Tremayne Miller.

A viewing will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on September 13, 2025, at Mount Zion Apostolic Church, followed by a funeral service led by Pastor Hugh Barrows and Assistant Pastor Michael Allen. The entombment will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Memorial Park Cemetery Mausoleum in Skokie, IL.

Freda's faith was a cornerstone of her life, and she was guided by the scripture of John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."

Though absent from our sight, Freda will live forever in our hearts and in the presence of God. Her love, laughter, and light will continue to guide us always.
