Hortencia "Tenci" Shoman

A beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully in the home of her son on October 8th, 2024, held by her loving children. Born on October 11th, 1931, in Belize City, Belize, Tenci was a vibrant presence to all who knew her. Her generous spirit and loving nature made her an irreplaceable part of her family and community, waving an indelible mark on the hearts of those she touched.

A true embodiment of selflessness and hard work, Tenci dedicated her life to her family. Her joy was in cooking, baking, gardening, listening to music, dancing, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Tenci was a remarkable woman - immensely creative, intelligent and self-made.

From a young age, she sacrificed her own education to care for her siblings, and later channeled her entrepreneurial spirit into opening two successful stores in Belize, known for their exquisite textiles and handcrafted embroidered veils.

Tenci's Fancy Store, located on Orange St. and Orange Walk, became a beloved destination, attracting customers near and far. It was there that her love story with her late husband, Ali, blossomed. He was her one true love, and the rest of heart belonged to her family, which she would say is all she ever needed. Her family was her greatest treasure, and she spent her life nurturing and supporting them with unwavering love,

Tenci was preceded in death by her parents, Victoria Cocom and Epifanio Castillo. She is survived by her four children: Nasser Shoman, Adelah (Bob) Morrissey nee Shoman, Nabil Shoman and Amina (David) Schmelebeck nee Shoman. Tenci was also a proud grandmother to ten grandchildren: Chad, Leah, Jessica, Lacey, Kristina, Zac, Chloe, Angelina, Liam and Chase and a loving great grandmother to her two great-grandchildren Miles and Ace. Her legacy of quick wit, warmth, and kindness will be deeply missed by all of them.

Hortencia Shoman will be remembered for her boundless amount of ideas, creativity, beauty, unconditional love, coveted recipes and contagious humor. She had a remarkable ability to transform the ordinary into the extraordinary, and her influence will resonate for generations.

A true angel on earth and the matriarch of her family, her spirit will live on in the cherished memories and stories that bind us together.

Those who knew her will forever be in awe of her life and the love she shared so freely.
